Support to women quota on parliamentary elections in September - press release

Zagreb, 11. July 2016 - Croatian Association of Women in Legal profession (HUZUPP) welcomes the announcement of the president of Social-democrat party (SDP) Mr. Zoran Milanović that they will comply with so called "women quota" when drafting coalition electoral lists for the parliamentary elections in September and that party's Women Forum will be involved in their drafting.

"This will be kind of make-up exam not only for SDP, but also for HDZ, as neither of the biggest political parties and their coalition partners on the last paliamentary elections has complied with the obligation of equal representation of women and men on electoral lists, proscribed by the law. Minimum representation of women on electoral lists of 40% is the legal obligation. Therefore that is not only the test of gender equality but also the test whether the political parties comply with the law" said Tarja Krehić, president of the Association.

Participation of the Association at the session of the Gender Equality Committee of the Croatian Parliament

On the 6th meeting, held on 8th June 2016, Gender Equality Committee of the Croatian Parliament discussed the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on Gender Equality.
Representatives of the Association participated in the discussion with their initiative to amend the provision of the Article 15.
Their proposal was accepted and the Gender Equality Committee unanimously decided to submit a conclusion to the Croatian Parliament that obliges the Croatian Government and the Ministry of Social Policy and Youth to propose amendments to the Law on Gender Equality within three months in the way that Article 15, paragraph 2. is amended to read as follows:
“(2) In order to implement paragraph 1 of this Article, political parties and other authorized entities, when determining electoral lists are obliged to introduce special measures in a way that the representation of men and women on the lists for the election of representatives to the Croatian Parliament, members of representative bodies of local and regional governments and members of the European Parliament is not significantly unbalanced, according to Article 12, paragraph 3. of this Law.”
